Musts for hunting!

One of my favorite things to do is: Vintage Shopping! I'm always on a mad thrill of the hunt and when it comes to vintage is a fierce competition. I stayed local shopping on Kobey's and the Ocean Beach Antiques District but nothing compares when we shop at the mother of all: Rose Bowl. Here are my must for shopping for vintage and antiques:

uno.iphone / dos.sunnies / tres.single bills / cuatro.sunscreen / cinco.water / seis.cart / siete.bag / ocho. flats

P.S. You can find my other vintage excursions here, here and here! What I score was a 3D vintage view-master in original box (for the hubby's camera collection) and a 1940's mink headband with netting ( in perfect condition).

Mexico 911

Its been hard looking for the words to write this post but I guess the correct information will do. During the last couples of days Mexico has been hit with some of the worst natural disaster in history. Hurricane Ingrid and Manuel have destroy hundreds of roads, houses, businesses and families in the states of Veracruz and Guerrero. Although Mexico's Red Cross is doing whatever is in their possibilities to help there's a hundreds of silent victims suffering from this tragedy: animals & beloved pets.

Sadly there's not a big social and civil education in Mexico regarding household pets and animals and a lot of them are just in street looking for little to eat and a cozy shelter. Worrying regarding this matter I found a great organization doing everything they can to help families and their pets to survive this disaster. Thanks to Mundo Patitas they are constantly notifying the community via Twitter and Facebook were to find shelter, blankets, food and basic necessities for your pet. If you live in or near the Mexico City area here are a list of shelters that can help you:

Birthday Menu

Eggplant & Pasta Incaciata

Chocolate & Hazelnut Cake

Silk Sheets Cocktail

It's going to be Yan's birthday soon and I'm looking for a special birthday menu to celebrate his birthday. Lately he's been in a pasta kick and I figure to make this healthy and adventurous dish: Eggplant Incaciata! Also there's no celebration without an outstanding cake and this Hazelnut and Chocolate cake will cover his nutella cravings...and finally a tasty drink to wash away all this delicious food: Silk Sheets! Here are the recipes:

Eggplant & Pasta Incaciata:

Ingredients:
Red Sauce:
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 5 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 1 red onion, finely chopped
  • Two 28-ounce cans pomodori pelati tomatoes (whole peeled tomatoes), blended smooth
  • Pinch red pepper flakes
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Large handful fresh basil leaves, torn, optional
Eggplant & Pasta Incaciata:
  • Softened unsalted butter, for greasing pan
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmigiano, plus more a
  • 1/2 cup olive oil, plus more as needed
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, cut into 3 chunks each
  • 1/2 cup red wine, preferably Chianti
  • 2 medium eggplant
  • 1 pound ziti pasta, cooked to al dente
  • 1 pound fresh mozzarella cheese, grated
  • Special equipment: One 9-inch springform pan at least 3 inches high
Directions:
For the red sauce: Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the garlic and onions and saute until tender, 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, red pepper flakes and some salt and black pepper and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir the basil leaves into the sauce at the end of simmering, if using.

For the eggplant and pasta incaciata: Grease the bottom and insides of the springform pan with softened butter. Mix 1/4 cup of the breadcrumbs with 2 tablespoons of the Parmigiano cheese. Coat the inside of the pan well with the cheese mixture. Knock out any excess and discard.

Heat 3 tablespoons of the oil in a large saute pan over medium heat. Add the ground pork and sprinkle with salt and black pepper and saute until cooked through. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant. Stir in the red wine and simmer until reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Add 4 cups of the red sauce and bring back to a simmer. Cook for another 5 minutes and season with salt and black pepper. Reserve the remaining red sauce for another use.

Meanwhile, slice the eggplants lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick planks. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle the eggplant with salt and black pepper and fry in a single layer, working in batches, until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining eggplant, using 3 tablespoons of oil per batch. Remove from the oil and drain on a paper-towel-lined baking sheet.

Combine the cooked pasta with the mozzarella and ragu in a large bowl.

To assemble, line the bottom of the prepared springform pan with a single layer of eggplant, then line the sides with the eggplant planks vertically, allowing the excess to hang over the outside. Fill the inside of the lined pan with the pasta mixture, pressing down gently. Fold the flaps of eggplant over the top of the pasta, using any remaining eggplant slices to cover the top. Cover with plastic and weigh it down with a plate. Refrigerate for a few hours and up to overnight.

When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Sprinkle the top with the remaining Parmigiano and breadcrumbs. Cover the top loosely with foil, place on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake until bubbling and the top is golden brown, an additional 15 minutes. Let rest for 15 to 20 minutes and cool slightly before unmolding from the pan. Slice and serve.

Chocolate & Hazelnut Cake:
Ingredients:
  • 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for greasing pan
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 cup hazelnuts
  • 3 ounces chocolate (I like to use dark chocolate 65 to 75-percent), broken into pieces
  • 6 large eggs, separated
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (I like the salt from Trapani)
  • 13 ounces chocolate hazelnut spread, such as Nutella
  • 2 tablespoons espresso
  • Powdered Sugar, for dusting
  • Sweetened whipped cream, optional
  • Gelato, optional
  • Special equipment: 9- by 3-inch springform pan
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Prepare the springform pan by coating it in a thin layer with 2 tablespoons of the softened butter. Add the cocoa powder to the pan and tap the sides to coat the bottom and sides evenly. Discard any excess cocoa powder.

Put the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and toast in the oven on the center rack until just fragrant, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer immediately to a kitchen towel to stop them from cooking. Use the towel to rub off the skins. Set aside to cool.

Lower the oven to 350 degrees F.

Fill a 1- to 2-quart pot with about 1 inch of water and bring it to a bare simmer over medium heat. Place the dark chocolate pieces into a heatproof bowl and set it over the pot and simmering water (this is a bain-marie). The water should not touch the bottom of the bowl. Let the chocolate melt, and then stir gently. Remove from the heat when melted.

Chop the hazelnuts into small pieces using a chef's knife or a food processor. Make sure you don't turn them into powder.

Whip the egg whites with an electric mixer with the salt until they are almost at stiff peaks. Try not to over-whip.

Mix together the remaining 5 tablespoons butter with the chocolate hazelnut spread in a large bowl with a wooden spoon. Stir in the espresso. Add the yolks and stir briskly to combine. Stir in the chopped hazelnuts and melted chocolate.

Add one-fourth of the whipped egg whites to the chocolate hazelnut mixture and stir to lighten the batter. Then gently fold the rest of the egg whites into the batter in 3 additions. Don't over-fold.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Bake on the center rack of the oven until the sides of the cake start releasing from edges of the pan, 40 minutes. This cake is almost a hazelnut fudge, so no need to poke with a toothpick to check if the inside is ready or not. The cake will come out of the oven nice and fluffy and souffled, but it will deflate to half the size during its cool-off period.

Serve garnished with some powdered sugar and whipped or cream or gelato, if using.

Silk Sheets Cocktail:
Ingredients
  • 3 to 4 medium strawberries
  • 1 ounce balsamic vinegar
  • 2 ounces gin, such as Hendrick's
  • Ice
  • St. Germain Foam, optional, recipe follows
Saint Germain Foam:
  • 1/2 cup egg whites
  • 1/2 cup elderflower liqueur, such as St. Germain
  • Juice from 1 lime
Directions:
Muddle the strawberries with the balsamic vinegar, and then add the gin. Add ice and shake and strain into a rocks glass with ice. Top with St. Germain Foam if using.

A viewer or guest of the show, who may not be a professional cook, provided this recipe. The Food Network Kitchens chefs have not tested this recipe and therefore, we cannot make representation as to the results. Add the egg whites, liqueur and lime juice to a nitrous oxide cream charger (You want the cream charger not the soda charger.) Shake, then double charge with 2 nitrous oxide chargers. Yield: About 1 cup.

Mod 6: Assignment 01

Here is our first assignment in Final Cut Pro. It was a little easier with the knowledge of After Effects but still there is a long road to dominate the program. For this assignment I did a commercial of Cafe Ole. The vibe is dark and moody similar to a film noir scene. The voice-over is Yan! Being my first project in Final Cut. I'm pretty happy with the end result. See my previous movies here and here!

Mod5: Assignment 03

I'm so proud of this animation I did. I took a lot of sweat and tears but the end result is good. The animation is mainly made in After Effects but I also work heavily with Illustrator and Garage Band. The theme of the project is a continuation of the Non-Profit poster that I made for the "HSTJ" because the subject is a little gloomy I wanted to create a technicolor dream of awareness. Check out my last animation too!

Mod5: Assignment 02

Yan Yanez Photography

The latest assignment in After Effects was a 15 second animation working with our Black & White logo that we created on Illustrator and audio with Garage Band. It was a challenge! Lots of panicking, tears and frustration but at the end of the day I managed to pull threw and make a good animation. I was inspired by old silent films meets victrola with a little bit of Mulholland Drive. It took me about 20hrs to make and edit 15 seconds. Hopefully it would less of a challenge for the next 30 second assignment. Check out other related assignments here and here!

Mod4: Assignment 01

Hello there! Lately school's been so overwhelming that I been forgetting to post the last two assignments. We are on another module now! We are DONE with print. We are currently working with audio and video, so you are gonna see more interactive assignments. The first assignment was in Garage Band, so fun! The assignment was to edit a video, courtesy of the apple collection and add NEW audio to it with the help of GB. I wanted something industrial with electronic and I think this work pretty well considering this is my first time working with video & audio. I did listen to a lot of groups to gather inspiration, my favorite are: Bat for Lashes, Nine Inch Nails, The London Suede, Gus Gus, Atticus Ross and Massive Attack. Also here, here and here are some of my favorite assignments so far!

Assignment03 is done! The task was to make a four page newsletter of a theme of our choice. I decided to focus mine on Mexican Coffee. Being a long time coffee lover and drinker and with my Mexican heritage this was an easy choice. The newsletter focus a little bit on everything from the History of Coffee in Mexico to the rise of the Co-Ops as well as benefits, recipes and the type of beans that grow in Mexico. I wanted something really colorful with traditional Mexican colors also something clean and easy to read. If your interested in the history of coffee read this. Gift Giving!

Is the thought that counts...not! Although I am grateful that somebody thought of me this holiday season sometimes is not always the case. This year I received the most random gifts ever! Stuff that are not my taste and that I will never ever used. I'm not gonna lie I was really disappointed with the selection but most of all was shock that somebody wasted there hard earn money on something useless or the fact that really nobody knows me/or what I liked. So before you are a victim of the gift giving blues think about this:

10 Golden Rules of Gift Giving

1. Set a Budget
The budget depends on how money you can afford to spend, how many people are pitching in to get the gift, the type of event being celebrated, and how important the gift-recipient is to you. When you set a budget it makes it easier to define the sort of gift you need to buy.

2. Consider the Event’s Importance
Particularly its importance to the person being honored. Some people go all out to celebrate a birthday; while others place more importance on Christmas... some even celebrate certain saint’s days. But there’s no need to wait for a special event to buy a gift; it’s always nice to get unexpected, spontaneous gifts.

3. Respect Your Friend’s Taste
Before you buy anything, keep in mind your friend or family member’s tastes. Take note of the sorts of things your friend tends to buy, their favorite colors, what their house looks like, their pastimes... If it’s someone you know well, buying a gift should not be too difficult. If you don’t know them very well, do some research, ask questions and find out as much as you can about them.

4. Take Notes All Year Round
If you often surf the Internet and you find a gift idea for a friend or family member, make sure you use the bookmarks on your browser to keep track of that page so you won’t forget it. Sites such as amazon.com that manage a personalize wish list of your family or friend and allow you to organize and check them out using any computer are also quite helpful. When that birthday or holiday rolls around, all you’ll have to do is consult your friends/family wish list: it’s like a letter to Santa, only the gift-giver writes it.

5. Look for Ideas: Brainstorming + Internet
Prepare a meeting with anyone else who’ll be pitching in for the gift so you can brainstorm gift ideas. Let each person make suggestions, and make sure you take notes. Then buy whatever you like. You can also get ideas from the Internet. There are specialized gift sites such as uncommon goods or red envelope, where you can find gifts for everyone (girlfriend, kids, ex, grandparents, mom...) and for any occasion (Christmas, Valentine’s, Father’s Day...).

6. Nothing Too Practical
Your gift shouldn’t be something practical: they’ve probably got that sorted. Socks, photo albums, tablecloths... Save yourself the trouble. Generally, most people take care of their own needs and when your birthday comes around you expect to get a treat, the sort of thing you’d never buy for yourself or simply can’t afford.

7. No Decorative Accessories
None. Even if you think you know your friend perfectly well, home decor is very personal. A picture, some cushions, a wall calendar, a clock... don’t risk it. If they don’t like it, they’ll have to hang it one the wall every time you visit, and will end up resenting you. It could ruin the friendship.

8. Ask Them What They’d Like
This is an extreme option you should only pursue if you’re desperate and aren’t very sure of yourself. Advantages: you’ll get something they like. Disadvantages: there’s no surprise factor and your friend will quickly forget who got them that great gift.

9. Make Creative Gifts
Gifts don’t always have to be something material. You can also design them yourself, buy theater tickets, organize a surprise party, a trip, or offer to be someone’s slave for a day. The best gifts are creative.

10. All-Purpose Gifts
These gifts may not be very original, but they’re sure to be a hit:
-For gals: candles and soaps.
-For guys: gadgets and their favorite TV series on DVD.
-For moms: flowers and theater tickets.
-For dads: films and technology.
-For people who have it all: something totally useless. It’s something they’re not likely to have already.
-For people who never buy anything: essential basics such as personalized towels, journal or a mug.
-Never Fail: movie tickets, spa certificate, favorite restaurant gift card, a good book and a staycation in their favorite hotel.

Also is your heart is not in it don't give anything. It's better that way, a bad gift can ruin everything.

Perfect X-Mas

So pretty much we had the perfect X-Mas. We woke up late and I mean late (1:30 p.m. anyone?) with the hubby and the dogs in bed, had a nice walk in the neighborhood, went to see Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (it's awesome...now I want to bleach my eyebrows) and we end the night with pizza (delivered of course) and Elf. Happy Holidays!!

Panoramic Postcard 5x7

This is the second assignment we do on InDesign. The task was to make a promotional flyer/direct mail of our choosing. I continue with the corporative identity that I already made for Yan and make a panoramic postcard featuring some of his work, focusing in pet portraits. It was a little intense cause my days are getting busier and busier with the Holiday season, between catering, extra hours at work and the rain its getting almost impossible to complete the tasks. Good thing this is the last assignment before our Christmas break. You can see the logo here and the corporative identity here!

Corporative Identity

We just finish our first assignment on InDesign. This program is helpful for identity, brochures, print media and more. I usually I'm really good on time management but for the last few days I struggle to keep up, between my cafe ole duties, daily errands, my part time job and school I was a mess the whole week but at the end I made it. I wasn't thrilled with the quality of the image at the print shop but at least I had something to turn in.This is the corporate identity that I'm developing for Yan's freelance work as a photographer. Hope he likes it! Check out the post on the making of his logo.

 Camille Rose Garcia, original art

Camille Rose Garcia, trace artwork

After a mini break we are back to school! The final assignment for Illustrator was to trace a piece of art from a famous artist. I decided to go with Camille Rose Garcia, being a long time fan of hers it was an easy choice. I love her whimsical but dark style to her pieces. Usually for an assignment we have a one week to complete the task but this time they gave us two weeks and every minute was need it to complete the assignment. It was hard! At the end I'm happy with the final result. Here, here and here are some previous assignments.

Final Logo

For assignment 03 the task was to make a black and white logo in illustrator. I decided to make a logo for Yan (the hub's) for his photography classes and future business. He wanted something with a vintage cause he's working with 35mm camera but at the same time a modern touch. I made an abstract image of his camera with modern lines and the font that I chose was similar of a vintage typewriter follow by a sleek and modern type. You can see my previous illustrator assignments here and here. For Yan's work look here!

Non-Profit Poster

Assignment 02 is done! The task was no make a promotional poster for a non-profit organization of our choice. I decided to go with the Humane Society de Tijuana (amazing organization). The message is spay and neuter our pets to save lives and avoid over population. I went with rich Mexican colors (similar to travel ads 40's & 50's), the city of Tijuana in the horizon and iconic Aztec images for the dog (xoloitzcuintli) and cat and very simple type for the contact info.

iBlog ad

This Monday we turned in our latest assignment. It was a play of the famous iPod ad from almost 10 years ago! (wow...really? history). It's getting harder and harder to come up with original ideas in class, everybody so talented!! At first i was thinking of doing iPaint or iDesign but I scratch that cause I'm in a room full of artists so iBlog was it. I also did an iVintage just for fun.
