Musts for hunting!

One of my favorite things to do is: Vintage Shopping! I'm always on a mad thrill of the hunt and when it comes to vintage is a fierce competition. I stayed local shopping on Kobey's and the Ocean Beach Antiques District but nothing compares when we shop at the mother of all: Rose BowlHere are my must for shopping for vintage and antiques:

uno.iphone / dos.sunnies / tres.single bills / cuatro.sunscreen / cinco.water / seis.cart / siete.bag / ocho. flats

P.S. You can find my other vintage excursions herehere and hereWhat I score was a 3D vintage view-master in original box (for the hubby's camera collection) and a 1940's mink headband with netting ( in perfect condition).

Mexico 911

Its been hard looking for the words to write this post but I guess the correct information will do. During the last couples of days Mexico has been hit with some of the worst natural disaster in history. Hurricane Ingrid and Manuel have destroy hundreds of roads, houses, businesses and families in the states of Veracruz and Guerrero. Although Mexico's Red Cross is doing whatever is in their possibilities to help there's a hundreds of silent victims suffering from this tragedy: animals & beloved pets.

Sadly there's not a big social and civil education in Mexico regarding household pets and animals and a lot of them are just in street looking for little to eat and a cozy shelter. Worrying regarding this matter I found a great organization doing everything they can to help families and their pets to survive this disaster. Thanks to Mundo Patitas they are constantly notifying the community via Twitter and Facebook were to find shelter, blankets, food and basic necessities for your pet. If you live in or near the Mexico City area here are a list of shelters that can help you:

Hello friends,

The last couple of days have been a time of recovery and resolution for our friends of the East Coast. Many of us have friends or family and can relate to the tragedy. Here are a few things you can do to help...and don't forget  the furry ones need us too!  Also check if your community is doing any events to help.

Thank you.

Tony in Baja!

 Popotla
 Oaxaqueno Restaurant in Ensenada

Baja Beach

 Las Ahumaderas

La Guerrerense

On Monday was the most anticipated Tijuana/Baja show for Tijuana foodies since the first look of Chef Marcela in MS: The Apprentice. Highly buzz on social media, this episode of No Reservations: Baja in been 10 years in the waiting. Being a Tijuana native I was happy, disappointed and relief of the show. Don't get me wrong I love Anthony Bourdain for over a decade but I was a little disappointing of my Tijuana crew. I mean "Las Ahumaderas", "Kentucky Friend Buches" they went for the kitsch and not for the goodness. There's so many iconic places in Tijuana to eat: Hotel Cesar, Mariscos Titos, Tacos "El Guero" or Tacos "Aaron"  or any other hot dog stand in Downtown... but what I did like is that we went to my all time favorite dive bar "Dandy's del Sur". Also I would love to see Rafa Saavedra, Gerardo Yepiz  or the kids from Life & Food blog as the Tijuana fixers! The Ensenada and Valle de Guadalupe were amazing specially "Corazon de Tierra" you can see the love and honesty the chefs have for their land. Overall not bad! I think this is an amazing  source  for people to see that Baja is not all about drugs, prostitutes and pharmacies. Baja has so much to give to the world and chefs like Marcela, Placencia and specially Benito Molina and Diego Hernandez-Velasco Baquedano are a spark of hope to our community.

Gift Giving!

Is the thought that counts...not! Although I am grateful that somebody thought of me this holiday season sometimes is not always the case. This year I received the most random gifts ever! Stuff that are not my taste and that I will never ever used. I'm not gonna lie I was really disappointed with the selection but most of all was shock that somebody wasted there hard earn money on something useless or the fact that really nobody knows me/or what I liked. So before you are a victim of the gift giving blues think about this:

10 Golden Rules of Gift Giving

1. Set a Budget
The budget depends on how money you can afford to spend, how many people are pitching in to get the gift, the type of event being celebrated, and how important the gift-recipient is to you. When you set a budget it makes it easier to define the sort of gift you need to buy.

2. Consider the Event’s Importance
Particularly its importance to the person being honored. Some people go all out to celebrate a birthday; while others place more importance on Christmas... some even celebrate certain saint’s days. But there’s no need to wait for a special event to buy a gift; it’s always nice to get unexpected, spontaneous gifts.

3. Respect Your Friend’s Taste
Before you buy anything, keep in mind your friend or family member’s tastes. Take note of the sorts of things your friend tends to buy, their favorite colors, what their house looks like, their pastimes... If it’s someone you know well, buying a gift should not be too difficult. If you don’t know them very well, do some research, ask questions and find out as much as you can about them.

4. Take Notes All Year Round
If you often surf the Internet and you find a gift idea for a friend or family member, make sure you use the bookmarks on your browser to keep track of that page so you won’t forget it. Sites such as amazon.com that manage a personalize wish list of your family or friend and allow you to organize and check them out using any computer are also quite helpful. When that birthday or holiday rolls around, all you’ll have to do is consult your friends/family wish list: it’s like a letter to Santa, only the gift-giver writes it.

5. Look for Ideas: Brainstorming + Internet
Prepare a meeting with anyone else who’ll be pitching in for the gift so you can brainstorm gift ideas. Let each person make suggestions, and make sure you take notes. Then buy whatever you like. You can also get ideas from the Internet. There are specialized gift sites such as uncommon goods or red envelope, where you can find gifts for everyone (girlfriend, kids, ex, grandparents, mom...) and for any occasion (Christmas, Valentine’s, Father’s Day...).

6. Nothing Too Practical
Your gift shouldn’t be something practical: they’ve probably got that sorted. Socks, photo albums, tablecloths... Save yourself the trouble. Generally, most people take care of their own needs and when your birthday comes around you expect to get a treat, the sort of thing you’d never buy for yourself or simply can’t afford.

7. No Decorative Accessories
None. Even if you think you know your friend perfectly well, home decor is very personal. A picture, some cushions, a wall calendar, a clock... don’t risk it. If they don’t like it, they’ll have to hang it one the wall every time you visit, and will end up resenting you. It could ruin the friendship.

8. Ask Them What They’d Like
This is an extreme option you should only pursue if you’re desperate and aren’t very sure of yourself. Advantages: you’ll get something they like. Disadvantages: there’s no surprise factor and your friend will quickly forget who got them that great gift.

9. Make Creative Gifts
Gifts don’t always have to be something material. You can also design them yourself, buy theater tickets, organize a surprise party, a trip, or offer to be someone’s slave for a day. The best gifts are creative.

10. All-Purpose Gifts
These gifts may not be very original, but they’re sure to be a hit:
-For gals: candles and soaps.
-For guys: gadgets and their favorite TV series on DVD.
-For moms: flowers and theater tickets.
-For dads: films and technology.
-For people who have it all: something totally useless. It’s something they’re not likely to have already.
-For people who never buy anything: essential basics such as personalized towels, journal or a mug.
-Never Fail: movie tickets, spa certificate, favorite restaurant gift card, a good book and a staycation in their favorite hotel.

Also is your heart is not in it don't give anything. It's better that way, a bad gift can ruin everything.

Going to the Getty

This weekend we went to the J. Paul Getty Center and it was great. I previously visit the center about 10 years ago with some college buddies but this time was even better. The photography exhibit was great and very moving. Streetwise was specially touching and seeing a Van Gogh wasn't too bad either. The Garden was amazing. We spend way to much time there taking notes and pictures but totally worth it! Can't wait to go back. Here's a little history of the museum, the architect and the man behind this dream. I also like this little book to introduce your kids to these amazing museum!

UPDATE: Let's Move...San Diego

First Lady Michelle Obama, center, examines vegetables grown by Somali immgrant Khadija Musame, second from right, as interpreter Bilal Muya, right, farm coordinator Amy Lint, second from left, and Dr. Robert Ross, President and CEO of The California Endowment, look on Thursday April 15, 2010 in San Diego.

Returning from Mexico, Michelle Obama made a brief stop Thursday in San Diego to visit a community garden farmed by international refugees that she called a model for building healthy communities across the nation and around the world.

Obama toured the New Roots Community Farm to promote her “Let’s Move!” campaign against childhood obesity. The event kicked off a $1 billion project by The California Endowment to fund healthy living initiatives in 14 communities across the state, including the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, where the community farm is located. The project seeks to change lifestyles in low-income communities. Iton cited new research showing people live as many as 14 years longer in richer communities that offer safe parks, inviting bike lanes and organic grocery stores.

“You can predict how long somebody will live based on their address, and we should not be able to do that,” he said, pointing out that even in a physically fit city like San Diego where people bike, surf and sail daily, there are “pockets” where families have no access to fruits and vegetables and places to exercise.
Obama’s campaign includes introducing healthier school lunches and encouraging food manufacturers to reduce the sugar, salt and fat in foods.

Obama said the San Diego farm shows that “farmers coming from different corners of the globe recognized a common problem here in America” — the lack of fresh produce in people’s diets and the health problems that causes. Tsitsi Mutseta, 43, moved to San Diego from Zimbabwe eight years ago. She said the garden helped ease her mind as she adjusted to her new life in the United States, far from her family. She told Obama it also has given her peace as she fights cancer.

“I told her I come to the garden to relieve my pain. I get food from the garden that is organic and it connects me with my family because I grew up on a small farm in Zimbabwe,” said Mutseta, a tall woman who wrapped her arms around Obama and gave her leaves from her kale crop. “She said she would pray for me and she loved what I did in the garden.”

Let's Move...San Diego

Michelle Obama will tour a community farm in San Diego Thursday, April 15 as part of her campaign to end childhood obesity. The first lady will tour the New Roots Community Farm on Chollas Parkway, meet with farmers and volunteers and make remarks, according to the White House. Obama’s stop in San Diego comes on the final leg of her first official solo trip as first lady.

Earlier this week, she traveled to Haiti, where she toured the devastation from January’s earthquake. Obama then flew to Mexico, where she met with Margarita Zavala, wife of Mexican President Felipe Calderon, toured the National Museum of Anthropology and visited with school children.

She will be in San Diego to promote her “Let’s Move!” campaign, which seeks to improve nutrition, encourage healthy eating and ensure access to fresh and affordable foods.

SD Wine & Food Fest 2009

So the festival was awesome...like I said "Good wine, great food and fab chefs". More than we expected and definitely doing this every year. It was hard to choose but here are my five favorites and yes people after three years of not eating meet I broke the rules just for one day.

1. Pork with pickled jalapeño and root veggie salad, Kitchen 1540.
2. Pannacota Mojito, Rice Restaurant.
3. Cheesecake with passion fruit caramel, The Wesgate Hotel.
4. Spicy Beef and bleu cheese in buttery lettuce wrap, Indigo Grill.
5. Wild ahi tuna, McCormick & Schmick's.

And my favorite wine was the Pinot Grigio from Redwood Creek Wines but the prosecco was a close second. Also the feature artist was Robert Holton he portrays classic icons and landmarks with a splash of color.
